National Conference on Integrated Teacher Education Programme : Addressing the Issues and Challenges 20-22 February 2020

 20 - 22 February 2020

The Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, New Delhi has recently set up an Inter University Centre for Teacher Education (IUCTE) at the Regional Institute of Education, Mysuru. Which is one of the components supported by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT), New Delhi. The IUCTE aims to strengthen the knowledge base of Teacher Education by facilitating professional development, networking, new knowledge creation and empowerment of teachers of Academic Institutions and Central & State Universities in Southern Region.

The three day National Conference  is a meeting place and platform for teacher educators and researchers from all over the world which creates a forum for inspiring keynotes, and a wide variety of papers on research and practices of integrated teacher education across the globe. It further focuses on current trends, empirical challenges, and development of integrated teacher education from theoretical and practical points of view.  Valuable and fresh insights are on the anvil, to leave with suggestions, inspirations, and recommendations of theory, research, policies and practices in integrated teacher education.

The International Bureau of Education (IBE-UNESCO) specifies mainly three types of approaches to curriculum integration. They are multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary approaches. Advanced countries provide integrated courses and they have many success stories. As a prelude to government’s plan to gradually implement the integrated teacher education courses in the country, the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE 2018), has set the stage for the roll out of the four year integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) for pre-service teacher education. It aims at integrating general studies, with science and social sciences or humanities and professional studies comprising foundations of education, pedagogy and core subjects, and practices related to the task and functions of teacher education. The possibilities of combining aspects of pedagogy with other professional disciplines like Agriculture, Engineering and Medical studies also are to be explored.

In the context of the process of inception of ITEP gaining momentum, a relook into the researches, policies, and practices in this area across the world has become imperative and hope this National Conference will pave way for the revamping of teacher education in the country to attract the younger generation, by addressing the issues and challenges on implementing ITEP.
