Principal's Message

National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) was established in 1961, by Government of India as an autonomous organization to assist and advise the governments at the Centre and in States in the implementation of their policies for education, especially to bring about qualitative changes in school education and teacher preparation.

The council from then has grown and progressed with the establishment of National Institute of Education at New Delhi, Five Regional Institutes of Education at Mysore, Ajmeer, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, and Shillong, Central Institute of Educational Technology at New Delhi, Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Central Institute of Vocational Education at Bhopal.

The Regional Institute of Education, Mysore was established in August, 1963 to cater to the needs of the states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and the Union Territories of Puducherry and Lakshadweep.  During the last 49 years, the Institute  has rendered invaluable service to the nation in general and southern states in particular and has evolved into a unique organization, with its increasing range of activities that has influenced school education and teacher preparation in South India.

Regional Institute of Education, Mysore currently offers six programmes including the Ph.D programme. The Demonstration Multipurpose School is also an integral part of the Institute and serves as a laboratory of the Institute for carrying out action research, practice teaching, experimentation and innovation in school education. The institute is located on a sprawling,  picturesque, 120 acre campus and has an excellent ambience for higher studies, research and extension activities. The institute is well equipped with modern infrastructure in tune with the requirements of the modern world. We have students from different parts of the country pursuing different courses and they live together as one community. This is indeed a wonderful opportunity to experience multiculturalism in its true sense and feel the unity in diversity leading to national integration. The institute would be celebrating its Golden Jubilee year starting August 2012.

I am happy to observe that over the years, nurturing innovations and bringing about qualitative change in school education and teacher preparation has been the guiding principles of the Regional Institute of Education, Mysore. In order to achieve its mission the Institute has taken up substantial work in the areas of pre-service teacher education, early childhood education, research-based interventions, institutional planning, supporting development of textbooks, development of teacher manuals, continuous comprehensive evaluation, special education, guidance and counselling, supporting the nationwide orientation of in-service functionaries through various programmes (PMOST,SOPT,DPEP, EDUSAT Teleconferencing). RIE, Mysore is also playing a leading role in the universalization of elementary and secondary education through SSA and RMSA in the recent years.

Today, India is regarded as an emerging superpower by the world and our economy is growing at fast rate. However, there are many challenges to address in order to sustain the higher economic growth rate. The country needs more creative and innovative talents to meet the unprecedented challenges and advantages of the vast opportunities presented by technological changes and globalization. Therefore there is a necessity to renew our commitment to excellence in education. We have a committed set of faculty members, teachers and administrative staff in-charge of this great institution today. Together we will continue to innovate and attract the best talent from across the country and build this organisation from strength to strength and remain committed to excellence.
